Grounding (often referred to as "rooting") is a foundational skill in the practice of Qigong. On a physical level, grounding enhances stability, improves balance, and promotes proper alignment. Emotionally, grounding manifests as a stable, centered state of mind. It fosters clarity, a sense of purpose, and a deeper feeling of safety and relaxation. When you are grounded, you experience the present moment fully, with an unhurried sense that all is well.
On the other hand, being ungrounded can lead to feelings of disconnection, anxiety, confusion, and indecisiveness—common symptoms of high stress.
As an energy medicine practitioner, I often talk to my clients about the importance of grounding. During times of transition, especially in seasons governed by the Earth element, it's easy to become ungrounded. Overscheduling yourself and not allowing enough time for rest can lead to fatigue and a constant sense of being behind, trapped in your thoughts.
In The Way of the Five Seasons, John Kirkwood discusses how worry can impact us. Worry often keeps us trapped in future-oriented thinking, pulling us away from the present moment. It causes our Qi (life force energy) to stagnate, preventing the Spleen from transporting the Qi from food throughout the body. This is why, even when we eat the healthiest foods, they may not provide the nourishment we need. This is where the term "worried sick" originates. Worry can lead to headaches, jaw pain, and excess Qi in the upper body, which can make a person feel ungrounded.

How to Reconnect and Get Grounded:
· Practice Earthing: Spend time outdoors walking barefoot, feeling the earth beneath your feet. This simple act can calm your mind and connect you to both the earth and your body.
· Simple Qigong Movements: Practice these easy Qigong movements to stay centered and balanced.
· Meditate: Even just five minutes of meditation can make a difference.
· Listen to Music and Dance: Moving your body helps bring you back into the present and out of your head.
· Let Go with Compassion: Practice the art of releasing tension and worries with kindness and self-compassion.
As you incorporate these practices into your daily routine, you'll find yourself feeling more centered and resilient, even when life becomes hectic. The more grounded you feel, the more clarity, presence, and connection you will have with yourself and the world around you. Taking time for yourself isn't just a luxury—it's essential for your well-being.
